shooting schedule

Script

There isn't much dialogue in our title sequence. The lack of dialogue leaves the audience wondering more, which is the purpose of an opening sequence.

Jake: I'd like to report a crime

(reverse clash sound effect)

Tony: You've got the wrong man, you've got the wrong man (flashback, reverb and delay)

Matthew: It's been a long time bro, how're you doing?

(Matthew gets ignored, identity of who he's talking to isn't revealed.)

Tony: who called the police on me

(flashback)

Casting

Jake Gellar - Hooded Thug

Played by: Tyler Watts

Age: 18

Ethnicity: White British

Appearance: Blonde hair, Blue eyes.

Height: 5 ft 11

Reasoning: Malcolm and Jordan have known each other for much longer than I have known either of them. Therefore, It would make sense for them to be friends in the opening sequence, as the performance will be more realistic/convincing. This left me with the role of the 'hooded thug'.

Tony Brando - Falsely Imprisoned man

Played by: Jordan Fakolujo

Age: 17

Ethnicity: black

Appearance: black hair, dark brown eyes,

Height: 5 ft 10

Reasoning: I have experience of being in front of the camera as shown in my music videos. Therefore, i would be more experienced and less likely to get nervous so i would give an good performance. This character is the 'main' role in the sequence/film, meaning the actor playing this needs a calm state of mind.

Matthew Casey - Tony's friend

Played by: Malcolm Uzodibia

Age: 17

Ethnicity:

Appearance:

Height:

Reasoning: me and Malcolm are friends in reality, meaning that we can both give a convincing performance when acting. So It's only logical for Malcolm to play this character so this natural relationship could be shown in the title sequence.

Ethnicity: Black

Gender: Male

Height: 5 ft 11.

Facial Features:

low Hair cut, Black hair, Brown eyes.

Occupation:

Unemployed - Drug Dealer

Outfit:

Grey baggy hoody. Hood baggy covering eyes to keep the identity of the criminal hidden. Stereotypical intimidating, hooded 'chav' like character.

titles

We originally choose this font for our title sequence. The reason We choose this is because its unusual and distorted, as is our film. the font of the titles and the way they're displayed says a lot about the contents of the film. We want the audience to feel uncomfortable and uneasy when watching our opening sequence and the font helps.

We later decided to consider using the font above. The large, bold lettering has a big impact on the audience. The capitals along with the actual font being distorted leads the viewers to believe that something 'big' (due to large font) is going to happen. The title sequence's role is to create curiosity and interest, leaving mystery for the viewers, and I believe this font will be effective. This font creates clues and link to the story line of our film which is what a title sequence aim is. The letters in the title are on different levels which links to the highs and lows in the film with revenge being obtained throughout.

Brief

I have been set the task to make a original opening sequence of a movie which includes the titles in a group of three with Malcolm Uzobibia and Tyler Watts

conventions of a thriller

A thriller has various elements and conventions mainly based around suspense, tension and excitement. A thriller is more sociological than the blatant violence and gore of a horror so them conventions is replaced through different types of suspension and tension in thrillers. dark lighting on scary roads is a common convention, lowkey lighting hides things like location and characters faces which is also a convention of a thriller.

shot list

This is a picture of different shot ideas I had

sound

http://www.freesound.org/samplesViewSingle.php?id=7311
I think this music would work well with parts of clip because we have a scary atmospheric sound planned and the pace of the music would work well with the speed of the editing we plan do.

http://www.freesound.org/samplesViewSingle.php?id=15556
I think this music will fit nicely with a scene in my title sequence were a man comes out of jail after a year and this sound could the background noise he is listening to for the first time in a year.

http://www.freesound.org/samplesViewSingle.php?id=20780
this suttle sound effect could be used as the man is being released frim prison because it suttle but has the bell and the could could indicate some ring has started like a big round is started with a bell.

http://www.freesound.org/samplesViewSingle.php?id=58202
This is the sound of a car horn which could be included by when the man crosses the road to go and get in his car and find the person who called th eolice for him he get horned by an uncoming car which could symbolise he is doing something becuase when car drives are think another drive or padestrian is doing something wrong they often horn them

location research

The Bill ( Sun Hill Police Station )
Tyler's garage
(picture needed )

We have a scene planned were a man is outside of a house in a car so wait for a guy to come home from work. I took this shot as i thought that it would make an interesting shot for him to see the man hes waiting for in his wing mirror as he approaches his house.

I feel this location could work very well for my house seen and aspects of the road could symbolises parts of story line not being able to see the end of the road.

This shot is taken at a location near my house and although my shot is set night time i took the image in the day for better lighting to help with planning. I felt with the road having a steap hill this shot would make a great shot.

My group have decided to use a duffel bag weapons in when he Jake Gellar car for a shot out side of a house because we plan to make one of our characters wait in the car for another characters that lives in the a near by house to come home. we decided dress our cast in jeans and hooded jumpers because they are common clothes that people on estates wear and that's what type of characters we are creating in our title sequence.

film synopsis 'vengeance'

My groups film titled vengeance is about a man called tony who is reported to the police then arrested and sentenced to in a year in prison on drugs charges. Jake The man who made the phone call to the police from a phone booth is a target Tony's. After Tony is released from jail he meets a Friend for information on Jake but is encouraged to forget about the revenge and go back to dealing drugs, Tony doesn't take this advise as he feels need for 'vengeance'. With the information provided by the friend Tony manages to track down and then follow Jake from his work place to his house. shortly after arrival at the house Tony finds his way into to the house through the back door and makes his way upstairs and stabs Jake 14 times in the stomach, chest and leg. whilst the was happening Jake's wife Jackie and 14 year old son Jack was under the bed which tony was unaware of. Tony decides after murdering Jake he would move to Spain were he had some family. Then 4 years later jack is celebrating his 18Th birthday and coincidentally so was his girl friend Sam. Jack and Sam decided to invite 4 of there friends 2 boys and 2 girls on a short weekend holiday to Spain. The 6 of them didn't have much money at the time as they was students in full time education and jacks best friend David had family in Spain so they stayed with them. After arrival it is discovered that one of Davids family members is Tony who murdered jacks dad back in England and Jack gets 'vengeance' for his dead father and kills Tony by stabbing him 14.

My genre 1 'Blood Is The Drug'

Genre:
the dark lane with the person running into the darkness shows that this opening sequence is from a thriller film. With the houses in the distance and the girl running shows that the girl is running away from civilisation which adds fear because of the current situation in England with women getting abducted, rapped and murderd while there jogging and this title sequence plays on that.

Film Title:
This is a student film so it is not perfect because This title follows the conventions of a horror which makes it unclear to the true genre they are attempting to create.

Setting:

The woman starts on residential road which i suspect is near a country side because of the land rover in the background and she goes down what looks like a country lane. The residential road is a good start to the opening sequence and a good contrast to the dark room she is placed in after she was kidnapped.

Costumes / props:
The woman at the start is wearing headphones which shows she cant hear her surroundings which increases the fear that the makers of the title sequence is trying to build. The gloves and tools shows the intention that they plan to hurt the woman because them props are conventions of a character that does violent criminal activities.

Editing / camera work:

The shot were the car boot is open is a very creative shot and works well because is creates a low angle which displays the the men who kidnapped the woman as large which increases audience fear. the point of view shot of the man punching straight into the camera makes the audience feel that they are getting punched as well. The camera angle and editing follows the punch in the bottom two pictures above which is a very original peace of editing.

Titles / Font style:

The title and font size has room for improvment because they do not dominate the screen or stand out because they are small and not central.

Question 5 part 2:
(please give a example of two films below)

double indemnity (Wilder, 1944, USA)

Film Title:
The film title is very plain and basic which is mainly due to the fact the film is from 1945 and the technology and equipment was minimal compared to the modern day. This has a large affect on creativity that the film makers could introduce into the film.

Setting:

The Title sequence is set in Los Angeles, which in American is a affluent area which suggesting that the characters are wealthy higher class, which builds stereotypes in the audience minds on the characters before they are introduce which makes the more eager to see if the stereostypes are correct. This setting used in the opening seqeunce is a clue to the auduience what type of location will be in the film

Costumes / props:
The man in the title sequence is wearing a hat and long coat he is wear disguises him. This follows the conventions of a opening sequence and creates question to be answered later in the film.

Kiss me deadly(Robert Aldrich, 1955, US)

Film Title:
The title is very large an basic because this film is from 1955 so creativity in movies was far less because they was living in more simple times and technology was limited. The title is displayed backwards and enters the screen from the bottom and goes to the top which could be following the convention of a title sequence and be foreshadowing for part of story line later to come in the film.

Setting:

It is set in a remote country side road in America, the audience is shown this by the crops and the man with the American accsent.

Costumes / props:

As the film is set in 1955 there is not many props because and there is basic costumes as this was after the world war so the country was doing well.

Editing / camera work:
The shots in the opening sequence is very quick to show panic and The first shot we see is the shot of the women running with her bare feet which makes the audience ask question like why is she bare foot.

Titles / Font style:

The Font sizes is very large to make it clear and blatant in white on a background which was a convention of movies in that time peirod

How the opening sequence sets up a setting:

Genre:

Wallander (McCormack, 2008, UK)

Titles

In the opening sequence of Wallander we do not see any titles because it is not a film, it is a television show which was originally set abroad.

setting/ location

The setting is revealed by a helicopter flying over the ocean and then it shows the land where the two main characters. The establishing shot moves from sea to the land and this changed could be an early inidaction that change is coming in the story line.

Costumes and props:

We only see costuming of the two girls as they walk away from the cab. One of them is dressed in a very gothic style, with a leather jacket, jeans, and we see is covered in blood holding a knife. The other is also dressed in black but is just casual, with a jumper. This is effective because the colour black can help represent that the two dark characters.

Title and font style:

White, large capitals which stand out which make them look important, maybe like a warning and they are also really simple and don't give away too much information which keeps the audience interested and want to carry on watching to learn more.

Story:

The story is kept secret in the title sequence, All we have been shown is clues to later in the story sequence like how there is a cab driver who has been severely beaten by two girls and we see one of them drop a knife which then the knife shape cuts through the a yellow background the title is displayed over showing the importance the knife could be.

Interesting camera work:
when the woman drops the knife and the knife shape appears to cut through into a yellow background

Genre:

As soon as the body is discovered n the car from the close up with out actually seeing the murder, you can determine that the genre is thriller. It gives us lots of questions to ask with its large gaps left in the story during the title sequence which is a convention of thrillers.

Brick(Rian Johnson, 2005,US)

The title of brick is in white with a black back ground which doesn't follow the general convention of thriller films with the common blue title. the black and white title of brick stands out and looks very forceful which means the names has an impact on the audience.

Setting/Location:

The setting is revealed as a sewer with a man crouched over looking at a dead woman in shallow water. then switching to a school scene witch connects the previous location to it and leave many questions that the audience want to be answered.

Costumes/Props:
The man crouched over in the sewer is wearing glasses and is shown in a extreme close up which shows it could be a clue to later in the film. there is bangles around the dead girl in the sewer and the same bangles is framed in shot while a locker is being opened with the same arm and bangles

Genre:

Bricks genre is thriller and the opening sequence tells the audience this by showing them a dark, mysterious characters ,Erie music and a death,

Editing/Camera Work:

The editing was interesting when there was a close up shot of the dead girls arm with the bangles on and then cuts to the school scene with a close up of the same arm and bangles opening a locker. This editing placing these to shots together shows they have gone back in time which leaves a gap in the story that the audience wants filled which is a convention on a title sequence.

How The Opening Sequence Sets Up The Story:

Analysis of Memento (Christopher Nolan, US, 2000)

Title:

The typical thriller colour blue has been used for the title As it comes at the beginning of the title sequence it has been used to tell the audience that this film is a thriller before there even placed in the mood of the movie. The film makers use the colour Blue for the title of the film because the colour blue is normally associated with thriller film.

Setting:

The audience in the initial stage of the opening sequence has been shown been shown grey dull backgrounds and has been shown a murder scene in a derelict building type environment then switches to a black and white room which makes the audience ask questions of why the man is killing the man and whats happened after the murder because the location has been changed which leaves a gap in the story they want to fill.

camera work and editing

the editing was interesting because the film shows its ending at the start and then rewinds the time.

Title and font style

The title is very plain title and is in the common blue and the background changes while it stays up.

props/costume:
the costume has been used to show importance and with main character being placed in a suite. the have picked props like a guns, camera ,glasses which all have importance to the main storyline like how the man needs his camera to take pictures to help his bad memory.

characters introduced

There are not really any character introduced during the title seqeunce because the audience can only see the man holding the Polaroid picture, this isn’t enough to say that the man has been introduced because you can only see his hand which isnt enough nformation about the man himself.

Analysis of Memento 1

This picture shows the common convention of thriller films using blue which is used for the title and is also used in the picture that the title is placed over
which is also a convention of a opening sequences displaying a clue for later in the film.

This shot follows the conventions of a thriller opening by using mysterious close ups and not revealing everything and show clues to later in the film with the glasses upside down which could be used to show that things will not be seen right.

This extreme close up has been used to frame the guys head and his expressions while a voice over by him is used which places the audience in his mind and ensconces them into the film.

This is captured form one of the opening sequences scene were the shooting of the man is being re wounded this rewinding of time is showing sign that times is an important as it is in the opening sequence. This means its being used to place the audience in the mood of the film the film whilst submerging them in it so each shot is key.

What does a title sequence look like?

This title sequence from brick creates a dark mood which automatically places the audience into the world of the film and focuses them. extreme close ups leave the audience not being able to see every thing clearly then one or two long range shots. The longs shots are used to create clues for later in the movie and help the audience put the shots together and make some sense out of it like in the mood board the one long shot brings all of the other shots together. My opening sequence genre is thriller like Brick so its fits with my the ideas and aims for my genre with a dark and scary atmosphere created violence

Title sequence VS trailer

An opening sequence creates interest by placing the audience into the film and making them feel the mood, if the opening sequence isnt relevant then it will have no effect on the audience and the wont feel the need to watch the hole movie.

A movie trailer is made to create interest and a want to watch a film, it is made to atract the audience that are intrested by that genre of film. A trailer also show all the aspects of the film, showing all the best bits without spoiling the story or any part of the film which creates curiosity to watch the hole fiilm and fill in the gaps. This is also advertisement for directors and big actors or type casted .
.

initial ideas

We had the initial Idea is for a man to be dealing a type drugs on a road then he is seen by a member of the public who phones the police from a near by phone booth. after that the man is arrested and sent to jail for a year but we are going to put the title of the movie in directly after the phone booth scene. after the title we are planning to put 1 year later up on scene replacing the title then let it fade into a scene with the man that was sent to jail walking out of a police station and meeting his friend outside. His friend gives him information of the man who called the police like were he works and lives. The man then tracks the man down through out his day and ends up at his house then the title seqeunce will finish.

TheSixth Sense (M. Night Shyamalan, 1999, US) - Analysis

Title:
the title font is in the common thriller colour blue and becomes spaced out and also expand on the screen as the credits advance to the next shot. This may be an early indication that things get bigger as the film progresses.

Setting:
The setting is revealed to the audience in a cellar which is generally a scary environment so it is a clear indication of what is to come.

Costumes/Props:
The woman who is introduced in the cellar is wearing a dress and is getting wine which combined means a special ocassion of some sort is happening.

Editing/Camera Work:
The woman and cellar location is introduced with a light bulb very slowly turning on. this light blb looking like it doesnt work properly and could break at any minute in a dusty old celler creates fear and leaves the audience thinking something bad is going to happen.

Titles/Font Style:
The title font at the beginning of the film is all in capital letters and is very easy to read and is in blue which is a convention of a thriller which tells the audience from the start what type of film there watching.

Genre:
The genre of the film is a thriller we are shown this in the title sequence because at the begging it has an Erie music playing and the font colour is blue which is a convention of a thriller film.
